The city of Darien is located in McIntosh County, Georgia, in close proximity to the coastline at the mouth of the Altamaha River. The city is about fifty miles south of historic Savannah and the same distance from Jacksonville, Florida and is about 25 miles north of the beautiful Golden Isles. A small city by Georgia standards, the population has remained just under 2,000 people since the last estimate in 2010; however, that number has grown by 14.9% in last decade, giving the city a positive outlook regarding future growth and opportunity. The tidal estuary environment offers a comfortably mild climate and beautiful scenery filled with native flora and fauna.
In terms of attractions, Darien features a number of local historic sites that can be toured. One local favorite is the Fort King George Historic Site, a family-friendly old English fort on the coast that was the southernmost outpost of Great Britain in North America from 1721 until 1736. The site hosts festivals and battle reenactments in addition to regular tours. Another site to visit is Hofwyl Broadfield Plantation, located just outside the city at the river delta. Not only a tourist site, but also home to more than 144 species of birds - great for nature lovers! The area also offers many other recreational opportunities in the great outdoors, including fishing, boat tours, biking, and photography.
